# boot\_issues
Ayy this shit is specifically about a vanilla `ESP-01` module (not the `ESP-01S` or other variants), at least for now. [=[=[=[=[=[[=

# pr0blelm?
I recently received multiple `ESP-01` and `ESP-01S` boards from the same vendor. I tried uploading a basic sketch to all of them to check basic functionality etc, which worked fine for all the `S` b0ards but none of the vanilla ones.

So apparently there are guidelines __somewhere__ stating that in order to operate normally, there must be an external pull-up resistor of __10k__ Ohms between `VCC` and:
* `CH_PD` (may also be labelled `EN`)
* `RST`
* `GPIO0`
* `GPIO2`

In my case it was enough to just do the `CH_PD` pin, but depending on other factors such as external interference, it may be necessary to pull the other pins high too.
